Early Georgian

A fine early 18th century house. While of earlier origin, what we see is of 1731 – early Georgian. A broad doorway flanked by classical columns and crowned by a segmental pediment; an original panelled door.

Sash windows, with segmental arches with keystones, to the ground floor and square headed windows to the first floor.

A wide soffit and flat roof dormers with sashes. A good example of its period.

Georgian

Here is a spectacular residence which is completely balanced. A doorcase with a broken entablature and triangular pediment framing the fanlight. The windows set flush with the external face of the wall which marked the Queen Anne and early Georgian period. London Building Acts 1708 required recessed windows, although this style took some time to reach the provinces.

The various features of this house, particularly the doorcase, suggest a date of around 1740.
